SAM configures each ICU ambulance around the patient's current treatment. After clinical review, the transfer may include a doctor, nurse or paramedic together with ventilation, advanced airway support, cardiac monitoring, oxygen, infusion and syringe pumps. The service also supports carefully planned palliative or terminal home-discharge journeys.
Every transfer is reviewed individually. The medical team, equipment, transport method and timing are chosen around the patient’s current needs.

How is an ICU ambulance different from a standard ambulance?
An ICU ambulance is configured for patients who need advanced monitoring, ventilation, continuous medicines or a higher level of clinical supervision. The exact crew and equipment depend on the patient's condition.
Can SAM transfer a patient on a ventilator?
Yes, subject to clinical assessment and suitable arrangements at both hospitals. The team reviews ventilation, oxygen, airway, medication and contingency requirements before mobilisation.
Can the service support a terminal discharge home?
SAM can assess a comfort-focused journey home and coordinate the medical support required during transport with the family and treating team.
